FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
FAQ UP-DATE JULY 1As the IASSA/ICASS-secretariat still has a pending application for funding we have not been able to answer the applicants for travel support to participate in ICASS VI. This again means that many participants are not able to register and we as conveners do not know if all accepted abstracts will be followed by registrations. Thus we have decided to extend the registration deadline with two more weeks to July 15. Travel information
On the official web-pages of the Greenlandic Tourism Council you can find more information about travelling to Greenland from Iceland and America. Please have a look at this link:
http://greenland.com/content/english/tourist/news/news_archive/how_to _travel_to_greenland_via_iceland Some of you will probably be informed by the Iceland Air web-site that the flights are all booked. If so, do not be in despair as the seats in the flights probably are taken by travel agencies that have not necessarily sold the seats which therefore will be available for you. In that case you will have to contact our logistics consultant Mikkili Skourup and his assistants Rulu and Samo via this mail-address for booking your flights: advnorth@greennet.gl Criteria for qualifying as a student when registering?
"A student is a person whose main activity is to study at university level, up until obtaining their PhD". CHANGE OF DATE FOR REGISTRATION FEE
There are two different registration fees for the ICASS VI. One fee of 2000,- DKK (approx. 400,- USD / 265,- EUR) if you register and pay before 1. July 2008 and a fee of 2500,- DKK (approx. 515,- USD / 330,- EUR) if you register and pay after 1. July. How is a session defined?
Sessions consist of 1½ hour sequences (usually one or two but can be extended to three including a maximum of 9 papers). A session is expected to include 3 presentations (each 20 minutes) and 30 minutes of introductions, questions, comments and discussion. It is expected that the session proposer(s) will be acting as session chair(s). We kindly ask you to find a co-chair as well. We expect to be having mainly sessions – but if there are special requests and good reasons workshops and special panel sessions can be included in the program. What are the conditions for sending a paper proposal (deadline, format, etc.)?
Paper proposals should contain:
- name and full contact details of the author(s)
- title
- a 250 words (max) summary
- an indication of which session the paper should ideally be presented in (see list of sessions elsewhere on the www.icass.gl site); if the paper is already invited by a session leader, please indicate this
- Prospects for the funding of your participation in the Congress. We hope to be able to provide some travel funding to students, indigenous participants, as well as participants from Russia (and neighbouring countries). Please indicate on your abstract submission if you want to be considered for travel funding and under which category. Also, provide a rough budget of your estimated travel expenses. We anticipate to be announcing the award of travel funding in April.
- Deadline 31. March
Most flights from overseas land in one of the two larger airports in Greenland: Kangerlussuaq (to the north of Nuuk; SAS and Air Greenland flights), and Narsarsuaq (in South Greenland; only infrequent flights from Air Greenland). All flights linking these airports to Nuuk are operated by Air Greenland. Please visit www.airgreenland.com for more information. Air Iceland operates direct flights from Keflavik to Nuuk, using smaller Dash-8 airplanes and thus bypassing the larger landing strips in Greenland. See www.icelandair.co.uk and www.icelandair.com When booking flights from Iceland to Nuuk you have to go to this link; Air Iceland - http://www.airiceland.is/ SAS operates some flights between Copenhagen and Kangerlussuaq in the summer http://www.sas.dk/Default.aspx?vst=true&epslanguage=EN We have a more thorough description of how to travel to Greenland in our 6th announcement. All announcements are posted at our website; http://www.iassa.gl/icass6/icass6.htm Can you give me more information about this possible source of funding?
We are at the moment approaching various organisations and institutions for funding for especially travel and participation grants. This means that we are not certain that there will funding for these purposes.
Please also notice that possible funding we receive will be strictly reserved to people who would not normally get funding (young researchers, indigenous, people from certain countries).
We encourage participants to look for other funding in the meantime.
We will advertise travel grants when we obtain funding (which may not be very long before the conference), but there is no guarantee on how many such grants we can make available. What does the registration fee include?
The registration fee of 2000,- DKK (approx. 390,- USD / 268,- EUR) includes lunch at all 5 conference days, transportation to and from the airport by shuttle, between Katuaq, the Cultural Centre and Ilimmarfik, the University campus, and furthermore: two evening receptions and the banquet dinner. In addition to these costs the fee covers the costs of hiring the Cultural Centre and tickets to a Dance Theatre Performance: "What's really going on around the North Pole". If you are a student the fee is only 1000,- DKK (approx. 180,-USD). The fee will be 2500,- DKK (approx. 488,- USD / 335,- EUR) if you register and pay after 1. May. Will the conference take place at one of the hotels you listed?
The conference will take place outside town at Ilimmarfik, the university campus and we'll have plenary sessions at the cultural house which is near Hotel Hans Egede. Busses will be going between town and the campus. What are the average prices for a breakfast, a lunch, and a dinner in Nuuk?
Lunch on the 5 congress days and 3 evening meals will be included in the congress fee.
Breakfast in a café varies but around 50 DKK (approx. 10 USD) Lunch is a bit more maybe 14-16 USD - but note that lunch is included in the registration fee. Dinner is from 14-16 USD in cafeteria/pizzeria and up 70-80 USD at a very good restaurant. Do I need to apply for a visa in order to travel to Greenland?
Visitors from certain countries (among others Russia) coming to Greenland must apply for a Danish visa at the Danish Embassy in their own respective countries. Please visit this site if you are in doubt: http://www.nyidanmark.dk/en-us/coming_to_dk/visa/who_needs_visa.htm What does the registration fee include?
