Travelling to and from Nuuk

Despite our best efforts, we were unable to convince any of the three airlines flying into Greenland next summer to offer special conference deals. Conference participants are therefore advised to make their own travel arrangements, the sooner the better.

Most flights from overseas land in one of the two larger airports in Greenland: Kangerlussuaq (to the north of Nuuk; SAS and Air Greenland flights), and Narsarssuaq (in south Greenland; only infrequent flights from Air Greenland). All flights linking these airports to Nuuk are operated by Air Greenland. The distance and price from either Kangerlussuaq or Narsarssuaq to Nuuk are about equivalent.

We hereby provide some information about the three airlines that will operate flights to Greenland next summer (we take no responsibility for possible changes in the conditions during the season).

If this is your first trip to Greenland and you are concerned with questions on what to wear, electric plugs, if there are mosquitoes, where to look out for polar bears and so on, please pay a visit to the official web-pages of the Greenlandic tourism organization Greenland Tourism;

AIR GREENLAND

Air Greenland tickets can be bought directly (e-ticket) on their website (http://www.airgreenland.com), thereby avoiding the 500 DKK service fee charged when buying through a travel agent. Look for the cheapest “red” tickets, whose dates cannot be changed.

Air Greenland flies almost daily from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq, and less frequently from Copenhagen to Narsarssuaq. Please note that most flights leave Copenhagen around 9 am, which may entail an overnight stay in Copenhagen (same issue on the way back, since most flights reach Copenhagen in the evening).

Departure days CPH; 20. August 21. August and 22. August.
Departure days Nuuk; 27. August, 28. August and 29. August + additional dates.

SCANDINAVIAN AIRLINES SYSTEM

SAS operates some flights between Copenhagen and Kangerlussuaq in the summer. SAS has flights from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq on August 21st. Then you have to go to Air Greenland to book your flight from Kangerlussuaq to Nuuk at www.airgreenland.com
There are return flights to Copenhagen from Kangerlussuaq August 25, 29, and other days.

ICELAND AIR

A third and last possibility is Iceland Air (http://www.icelandair.co.uk)

Iceland Air operates direct flights from Keflavik to Nuuk, using smaller Dash-8 airplanes and thus bypassing the larger landing strips in Greenland.

Their booking system is a bit complicated as you can only book flights directly from Heathrow, England or Copenhagen to Nuuk, but there are also fligthts from Minneapolis-St. Paul, Boston and Toronto going to Iceland and then from there you can go to Greenland.
Go to www.icelandair.com for further information and booking.

When booking flights from Iceland to Nuuk you have to go to this link; Air Iceland - www.airiceland.is

Departure days Toronto, Boston or Heathrow; 21. August, one night in Iceland and further on to Nuuk 22. August, arrival in Nuuk 11.00 am local time.

Departure days Nuuk; 28. August, one night in Iceland and from Iceland further on to Toronto, Boston or Heathrow 29. August.
